To complete the FAFSA® you’ll need:
A list of the schools you have applied to (or might/will apply to)
Your Alien Registration Number (if you’re non-citizen)
Financial documents. If you’re unmarried and under 24, you’ll need this information for both yourself AND your parents. Prepare the following:
FSA ID
Tax returns from 2 years prior (for example, for the 2025-2026 FAFSA®, get your 2023 tax return). In particular, you’ll want your IRS Form 1040 and any W-2s. If you filed a Schedule 1, Schedule 2, Schedule 3, or Schedule K form, you’ll also need those.
Records of any untaxed income like child support, alimony, welfare benefits, or veterans benefits.
Information on your current bank account balance (checking and savings accounts)
Information on any current assets like stocks and bonds, investments, or real estate (excluding the house you live in).
Finally, before you submit, you'll need:
Your social security number (SSN)
Your parents’ social security numbers (SSNs), if they have one
