To complete the FAFSA® you’ll need:

  • A list of the schools you have applied to (or might/will apply to)

  • Your Alien Registration Number (if you’re non-citizen)

Financial documents. If you’re unmarried and under 24, you’ll need this information for both yourself AND your parents. Prepare the following:

  • FSA ID

  • Tax returns from 2 years prior (for example, for the 2025-2026 FAFSA®, get your 2023 tax return). In particular, you’ll want your IRS Form 1040 and any W-2s. If you filed a Schedule 1, Schedule 2, Schedule 3, or Schedule K form, you’ll also need those.

  • Records of any untaxed income like child support, alimony, welfare benefits, or veterans benefits.

  • Information on your current bank account balance (checking and savings accounts)

  • Information on any current assets like stocks and bonds, investments, or real estate (excluding the house you live in).

Finally, before you submit, you'll need:

  • Your social security number (SSN)

  • Your parents’ social security numbers (SSNs), if they have one
