[FAFSA®] Can I include information for my legal guardian instead of my parents?

Parent information is only required if you are considered a dependent of them. If you have a legal guardian who is not your parents, this may qualify you as an “independent” student. In this case, you’d only need to report your own finances. However, note that this guardianship must be legally formalized; a court must have authorized your guardian to take care of you in place of your parents. It cannot be an informal agreement.
